Men's Soccer ends three game skid with lightning shortened victory over Carroll

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team ended their three game losing skid on Saturday in what was a tale of two halves where the Spartans prevailed over the Carroll University Pioneers in a lightning shortened game by a final score of 3-2.

In the opening half, both the Spartans and Pioneers worked to control the ball throughout the first 25 minutes without a score before the Spartans got into the penalty box as the Pioneers got called for a foul setting up Michael Poitry for a penalty kick. Poitry would deliver for the Spartans on the left side of the net giving them a 1-0 lead. In the early stages of the 39th minute, Gavin Wooldridge would send a great pass into the box to Liam Persson to double the Spartans lead at 2-0. Nearly three minutes later, the Spartans were able to strike again as Poitry took a corner kick near the box and put it in the upper left corner of the goal to give the Spartans a commanding 3-0 lead at the half.

The second half would completely flip on the Spartans getting out shot by the Pioneers 11-1 over almost the first 30 minutes of the second. The Pioneers would strike on two of those shots at the 51st minute and 59th minute. With the score at 3-2 favoring the Spartans and 16:21 left on the clock, the officials would stop play for lightning in the area. The delay would last roughly 45 minutes before the game would be called.

If a game plays at least 70 minutes, the game can count as an official game. The game also cannot restart after three hours have past from the original start time. Thus the game being called when it did, giving the Spartans a 3-2 victory.

The Spartans only had four shots on goal and six total shots compared to the Pioneers having 19 shots and five on goal. Matt Marchiori picked up win number two on the season collecting three saves.

The Spartans currently sit at 2-5 overall on the season.
