Women's Soccer Shutout in Season Opener by Grinnell

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer opened their season tonight against the Grinnell College Pioneers and the Spartans offense would be shut out by the Pioneers as Grinnell was able to snag a 2-0 victory from the Spartans on Friday night at Oyen Field.

For what is to come this weekend with extreme heat across the area, Friday night at Oyen Field was the place to be as the temperatures were perfect for the Spartans season opener. In the opening minutes of the first half, there was not a whole lot of offense on either side of the ball as the lone shot in the first nine minutes came on an Olivia Roth shot that missed left of the net. The first shot of the night for Grinnell came at 9:51 and it was a big one as Keiko Smith scored the Pioneers first goal of the game. Grinnell would hold the 1-0 lead into the half, but would quickly double their lead to open the second half as Grinnell's Smith scored her second goal on the night at the 49:57 mark.

Emma Kober led the Spartans with two shots on goal, but would be unable to capitalize on either opportunity. Hannah Husnick had three total shots with one connecting on goal. Riley Trudeau also added a pair of shots for the Spartans.

The Spartans were fairly matched in shots with the Pioneers but Grinnell having four more shot on goal attempts made the difference in the game. The Spartans had five corner kick opportunities compared to holding Grinnell to two opportunities. Both the Spartans and Pioneers each had one yellow card drawn on them in the 90 minute match.
