Strong First Half Propel Spartans to Victory Over Edgewood

VERONA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque Spartans concluded their last non-conference game of the season this evening as they traveled to the campus of Edgewood College Eagles. The Spartans jumped out in front early and did not look back as they scored 10 goals in the first half, eventually winning 14-5.

After five minutes of action, the Spartans got on the scoreboard first as Kyle Hephner scored with 9:05 left to go in the quarter. The Eagles responded with a goal of their own tying the game at 1-1 before the Spartans scored three unanswered goals to close out the the first. In a span of three minutes Sam Todd scored two goals and Aidan Culligan also found the back of the net from an assist by Giovanni Silva to take a 4-1 lead. 

Culligan started out the second quarter with a goal in the first minute which was followed by Aiden Ennett's first goal of the game with nine minutes left to stretch the lead out to five. The Eagles scored their only other goal of the first half to pull within four. The Spartans would end the first half on a 4-0 run as Tyler Johnson, Todd, Silva, and Jacob Collar all scored taking a 10-2 lead into halftime. 

Not even ten seconds into the third quarter Ben Farraday got in the score column from Silva's third assist of the game. The Spartans would go on to score three more goals in the third extending their largest lead of the game to 11 (14-3). As the final seconds ticked down the Spartans would win 14-5. 

Eight different Spartans recorded goals in which Culligan led the charge with four goals followed by Todd with three, and Johnson with two. Defensively, Ryan Doyle had 10 ground balls and forced five of the 15 caused turnovers. The Spartans dominated faceoffs as they won 20-23 as Nikolas Wortman won 15-17. Goalkeeper, George Smirl earned his seventh win of the season as he recorded seven saves in three quarters of play. 

The Spartans are now over the .500 mark with a record of 8-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The Spartans will close out the regular season on Friday as they travel to Northland College. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
