MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - An eight goal first quarter propelled the University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team to a Midwest Lacrosse Conference victory over the Cornell College Rams 20-5 as the Spartans attack of
Ben Farraday,
Aidan Culligan, and
Giovanni Silva combined for 14 goals.
The starting attack for the Spartans was ready to go tonight aganst the Rams as they accounted for 13 of the Spartans 14 first half goals. Culligan had four of his five goals in the opening 30 minutes including four of the first six goals for the Spartans. Farraday scored his first goal with 2:49 left in the first quarter and would have his six goals by 5:18 left in the second quarter. Farraday also had three assists. Silva added three goals and four assists all coming in the first half against the Rams.
Jacob Collar added three goals in the second half which is a game-high this season and second most of his career.
On the defensive side of the field, the Spartans held the Rams to only 20 total shots with 11 coming on goal. The Spartans forced 39 turnovers and made the Rams fail to clear 14 times.
Ryan Doyle and
Justin Daly combined for 10 caused turnovers with five each. Doyle snagged nine ground balls and recorded an assist.
George Smirl picked up his fifth win of the season and second conference win in goal for the Spartans as he allowed one goal and collected two saves in 32:52 of action.
Landen Othoudt and
Nolan Nagy both saw action down the stretch with the big lead.
The Spartans had 58 total shots in the game with 38 on goal. The Spartans were highly successful in their clear attempts going 20-23. The Spartans were able to double and then some with collecting ground balls as the Spartans held the 66 to 30 advantage in the category. The Spartans scored on 4-5 on extra man opportunities.
The Spartans are now 6-7 overall with a 2-1 record in MLC action sitting in second place in the conference standings.
