Carthage Takes Down Men's Lacrosse on Sunday

KENOSHA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team traveled on Sunday to Carthage College to take on the Firebirds in a non-conference matchup where six Spartans found scores in a 17-9 losing effort against the Firebirds. 

The Spartans would trail right away as Carthage scored in the first 31 seconds of the game, but midway through the first, Aidan Culligan would tie the game up at 1-1. The next two scores would come from Carthage before Tyler Johnson and Giovanni Silva scored within a minute of each other to even the score at 3-3 with 10:43 left to play in the second. Over the course of the rest of the second and 10 minutes into the third, Carthage would score the next six goals to open their lead to 9-3. In the fourth there would be a total of 11 goals scored, but seven came from Carthage as they won by a final score of 17-9.

Culligan finished with a team best four shots on goal in eight attempts finishing with three goals and two assists for five total points. Johnson's three shots on goal resulted in two goals to join Culligan as the only Spartans to score multiple times. Nikolas Wortman won 10-17 faceoffs and finished with seven ground balls.  

The Spartans ended with 27 turnovers and were only able to force Carthage into 15 turnovers. The Spartans were out shot by 24 shots. George Smirl earned the loss allowing 17 goals and collecting 14 saves in the full 60 minutes in goal. 

The Spartans are now 2-4 on the season.
