DUBUQUE, Iowa - Wednesday evening the University of Dubuque Spartans continued non-conference play as they welcomed in the Vikings of Augustana College. Prior to this matchup, the Spartans were 0-8 all time against Augustana. That streak would end tonight, as the Spartans dominated all facets of the game en route to a 16-6 victory.
The Spartans controlled the game from the very beginning as they scored four goals in the first quarter while only allowing the Vikings five shots, shutting them out to end the quarter.
Giovanni Silva scored the game's first goal igniting energy and momentum which the Spartans carried throughout the game.Â
In the second quarter, Augustana found some offense as they scored four times cutting into the Spartans lead. Offensively, the Spartans continued to attack as they found the back of the net fives times. Within the last minute,
Aidan Culligan scored to increase the Spartans lead to five (9-4) as they entered halftime.
Augustana was first on the scoreboard in the second half narrowing the lead to four (9-5). A few minutes later,
Ben Farraday responded as he rattled off three straight goals in the span of two minutes extending the lead to 12-5. With 4:02 left in the third, Farraday scored a historic goal as he notched his 100th career point. In the fourth quarter, the Spartans scored two more goals coming from
Aidan Culligan and
Giovanni Silva to capture the win.
The Spartans had four players score multiple goals on the night.
Ben Farraday and
Giovanni Silva led the way with four goals each followed by
Aidan Culligan with three and
Tyler Johnson with two.
Sam Todd also found the back of the net once and recorded a team high five assists on the night. In goal for the Spartans was
George Smirl who recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes of action on his way to earning his third win of the season. Overall the Spartans out shot the Vikings by 17 and forced a total of 29 turnovers.

The Spartans will return to Oyen Field on Saturday, March 25, as they will host Illinois Wesleyan. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
