PELLA, Iowa - Friday night the University of Dubuque women's volleyball team started their road trip this weekend with matchup against the Dutch of Central College. In a closely contested battle, the Spartans outdueled the Dutch taking three straight sets remaining undefeated in conference play.
The opening set featured several runs by both teams. The Spartans found themselves down 9-6 early on but rattled off six straight points to take the lead at 12-9. On the ensuing serve, the Dutch used a 4-0 run to maintain a one point advantage (13-12). Both teams continued trading points as there was a total of eight lead changes and 12 ties. Four different times the opposing Dutch were serving match point but the Spartans responded every time including the final two kills from senior,
Ashlee Adler to secure a 30-28 set win.
The Spartans never trailed in the second set as
Alexis Bedier scored the first point with a kill. Late in the set, the Spartans extended their largest lead of the game at 19-13, eventually going on to win 25-22. Offensively, the Spartans used a balance attack as seven different players recorded at least one kill for a game high 15 kills.
Heading into the final set, the Spartans continued to roll dominating the third set securing a 25-17 victory. The Spartans hitting percentages jumped off the charts hitting at an efficient clip of 31% (11-32).
Bedier and Adler led the charge with nine kills each while
Emma Powell added seven kills. Setter's
Ashlyn McGinnis finished the night with 20 assists and
Alexis Kammerer tacked on another 11. Defensive specialist
Morgan Hunter led the team with 25 digs.
The Spartans improved to 14-5 overall and 2-0 in conference. Currently the Spartans sit atop of the A-R-C standings tied with Nebraska Wesleyan.
