INDIANOLA, Iowa - Saturday afternoon the Spartans volleyball team capped off the weekend with their 15 win of the year against the Simpson College Storm. Initially, the Spartans dropped the first set but took the next three sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) for the win.
The Spartans struggled early on as they only recorded six kills in the opening set. Both teams were knotted at 21 a piece but the Storm scored the next four points as the Spartans lost 25-21.
Senior outside hitter,
Emma Powell recorded three points early in the second set with a kill and back-to-back service aces to give the Spartans a slim 4-3 advantage. After several lead changes the Spartans held a 20-15 lead eventually winning 25-20. Late in the set, sophomore,
Payton Uptagraft helped extend the lead with four kills.
In the third set, the Spartans found themselves trailing 9-3 but erased the deficit tying the score at 12-12. The Spartans regained the lead after a 6-0 run with kills from
Alexis Bedier,
Ashlyn McGinnis, and
Ashlee Adler. Setter
Alexis Kammerer closed out the third set with a service ace as the Spartans won 25-19. The Spartans went on to finish the Storm in the fourth set by posting 14 kills.
Leading the charge for the Spartans in the middle was Uptagraft as she finished with a team high 14 kills and posted an attacking percentage of 51%. Two other Spartans recorded double digit kills as Adler had 11 and Bedier had 10. Setters Kammerer and McGinnis combined for 39 of the team's 44 assists. Defensive specialist
Katie Wright led the team with 19 digs.
The Spartans are now 15-5 and 3-0 in A-R-C play.
