DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team won their first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) tournament game since 2019 on Saturday after a 2-1 victory over the Central College Dutch on Oyen Field in the first round of the 2023 A-R-C women's soccer tournament.
As the #4 seed, the Spartans were able to use two goals from
Emerson Wilson and
Emma Kober to push past #5 Central College. The first goal by Wilson came off a corner kick from
Samantha Scodeller as the kick would hit off the right shoulder blade of Wilson to give the Spartans the first goal of the afternoon only 6:31 into the game. Over roughly the next 65 plus minutes, their were no scores as both sides were working hard on the defensive end trying to set up opportunities for their respective offenses. The Spartans were able to get on the board again in the 72nd minute as Kober scored her 16th goal of the season off an assist from
Kaelyn Nash. The Dutch would eventually get on the board five minutes later and not go away quietly, but the Spartans back line defense held strong to advance the Spartans to the semifinals.
Coach
Jason Berna mentioned "The conference tournament is always an exciting point in the season. It is a chance to play some great conference opponents again and hopefully show how much your team has grown. Today we played very well against a solid Central side and got a great 2-1 win at home."
The Spartans will now face the #1 seed Loras College Duhawks just down the road next Wednesday night and the Spartans are ready for a much anticipated rematch. "We are excited to keep that going in the semifinals. This UD team is really playing well and I expect we will do the same on Wednesday"
