Women's Basketball Falters in Loss to Wartburg

DUBUQUE, Iowa - (1/25/23) On Wednesday evening, the University of Dubuque women's basketball team squared off against the Wartburg College Knights for the second time this season. In the previous meeting at Wartburg, the Spartans battled and forced the Knights into overtime. However in tonight's matchup, the script was flipped as Wartburg cruised to a 75-49 win over the Spartans.

Early on, both teams traded buckets before Wartburg jumped out to a 15-6 lead with three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Spartans responded with a 5-0 run as Isabella Tierney drained a three followed by two free throws from Kathleen Mathias. As the quarter came to a close the Knights led 19-11.

A few minutes into the second quarter, the Spartans knotted the game back up at 19-19, as Tierney went on an 8-0 run by herself connecting on two threes and a layup. The Knights ended the half on a 12-0 run as they hit four threes to take 12 point advantage into halftime (31-19). Sophomore, Isabella Tierney led all scorers at the half with 15 as she was 3-4 from beyond the arc.

Wartburg continued their hot shooting from three point land as they drained another four threes in the third quarter. The Spartans shot 4-13 in the quarter as they were limited to 11 points as they trailed 47-30 at the end of the third. Halfway through the fourth quarter, Wartburg extended their largest lead of the game to 28 (69-41), as the Knights poured in another six threes in the quarter. As the final buzzer sounded, the Spartans were defeated 75-49.

Isabella Tierney was the lone Spartan in double figures with 17 points, shooting 7-14 (50%) from the field and grabbed five boards. Tabria Thomas finished the night with eight points while Kathleen Mathias had seven points and led the Spartans in rebounding with eight. Both teams scored 20 points in the paint, but the difference in the game was three point shooting. The Spartans shot 6-19 (31.6%) from the deep while the Knights shot an impressive 17-37 (45.9%).

The Spartans now fall to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in the A-R-C.
