Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Labor Day Matchup With Bethel Ends In Draw

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team had their home opener on Labor Day as they took on the Bethel University Royals out of Minnesota. After drawing their first match with Grinnell College, the Spartans had sights on winning their first game on the young season, but the Royals and Spartans were evenly matched as they tie 1-1.

The Spartans and Royals would play the opening half evenly as both defenses prevented the offenses from finding any sort of rhythm. Both teams had a few opportunities to find the back of the net, but neither could deliver. With the score being knotted at 0-0 through the first 15 minutes of the second half, Bailey Brennan would find Riley Trudeau in the box as she hit the upper crossbar and then resulted hitting the goal line for the first goal of the season for the Spartans and the 1-0 lead. Initial reactions on the field resulted in the Spartans cheering the ball crossed the goal line, while Bethel kept playing on as if the ball was still live. After the referees conferred, they said the ball crossed the plain and the Spartan goal. Bethel wouldn't take long on their offensive end as less than four minutes later Bethel shot a ball passed Elisa Langer for the score to even the score 1-1. Both defenses would dominate the rest of the game ending with a 1-1 draw.

Trudeau finished with six shots and four on goal including the lone goal for the Spartans. Brooke Brodzinski added three shots and two of them were on goal. Langer remained in goal for the full 90 minutes giving up a goal while saving three shots. The Spartans were held to four shots in the first half before piling on eight shots to finish the game with 12. The Spartans were given six corner kick opportunities compared to just three for the Royals.
