DECORAH, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women's soccer team opened up American Rivers Conference play on the road on Saturday evening with a matchup against the Luther College Norse. The Spartans grabbed the first lead of the game early in the second half off a goal from senior,
Abby Wiegand, but the Norse quickly answered with a goal to even the game resulting in a 1-1 draw to open conference play. The Spartans continue to be undefeated at 3-0-5 through eight games and sit at 0-0-1 in A-R-C play.
The physical defense by the Norse held the Spartans to only two shots in the first half. The Norse tallied eight shots which resulted in two saves for goalie
Elisa Langer in the first 45 minutes of play.
With both defenses on display, entering the second half, either team was looking for one opportunity to get a score and hold their own. Wiegand would provided key minutes off the bench for the Spartans and in her only shot attempt of the night, she would find the back of the net for the first time this season in the 54
th minute. What seemed like the one goal lead could be enough for the Spartans, the Norse would strike back in the next minute knotting the game at 1-1. Both teams battled to the final seconds, but no one could capitalize resulting in a 1-1 no decision.
In total the Spartans recorded seven shots with three being coming on goal.
Emma Kober led the team with four shots, followed by
Baylee Vincent and
Bailey Brennan with one shot. Langer tallied another four saves adding to her total of 27 saves on the season. The Norse had six corner kick chances, whereas the Norse defense held the Spartans to zero.
