DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team hosted the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks in a non-conference match-up at Oyen Field this afternoon where the Spartans were looking to answer the bell and get back in the win column after having fallen in their last two contests. The Spartans used a strong third quarter where they scored five goals en route to an 11-6 victory over the Scarlet Hawks to move to 2-5 on the season.
Coming into today's matchup, the Spartansturned the corner offensively and were off to a good start as they have trailed early in their last two games. The Spartans changed that narrative today as
Sam Todd found the back of the net not even two minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead at the 13:23 mark of the first quarter. The Scarlet Hawks answered shortly after to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams would continue to trade goals and would be knotted at 3-3 at the early in the second quarter. UD exploded offensively with eight straight goals to open up their lead to 11-3 with 5:59 left in the third quarter. The Scarlet Hawks answered with three straight goals, but it would not be enough as the Spartans claimed the victory on their home field.
As a team the Spartans had great success clearing the ball onto their offensive side of the field as they cleared 22 of their 25 attempts on the day. The Spartans totaled 46 shots and collected 32 ground balls.
Ryan Gartner got his second win in goal as he saved 12 shots in 55 minutes of play.
Zach Schmitt had a game-high three goals in the victory.
