ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team would travel to Augustana College to face the Vikings on Wednesday night where the Spartans would hold an early lead, but a dominant second quarter by the Vikings was the difference in this one as they would go on to beat the Spartans by a final score of 10-6.
The Spartans would strike quickly as
Tyler Phipps scored not even two minutes into the contest to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead at the 13:35 mark of the opening quarter. The Vikings would answer to tie the game before
Nikolas Wortman would score a man up goal to retake the lead for the Spartans, 2-1. The Spartans would then go on a cold stretch where the Vikings managed to score seven unanswered goals to give the Vikings a 8-2 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Spartans would continue to fight throughout the fourth quarter outscoring the Vikings 4-2 with two goals by
Tyler Phipps, one by
Christian Melton, and the other by
Sam Todd. The Vikings lead was just too big and the Spartans attempt at a comeback falls just short.
The Spartans would shoot 36 shots in the game with 20 of them coming in the fourth quarter. The Spartans attempted 28 clears and were successful on 19 of them as well as collecting 24 ground balls throughout the contest. The Spartans had 28 turnovers with 12 coming in the second quarter in which they struggled offensively. Along with the goal,
Ryan Gartner played all 60 minutes and saved 13 shots while allowing 10 goals in the loss.
