Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong Second Half Pushes Spartans Past Beavers, Notches Sixth Straight Win

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The season started nearly a month ago and tonight was the home opener for the University of Dubuque men's basketball team where they face a familiar conference opponent in the Buena Vista University Beavers. The Spartans would win their sixth straight game and stay unbeaten in conference play at 2-0 after defeating the Beavers 76-60.

The Spartans know the Beavers very well as they have faced each other in the last two A-R-C Tournament Championship games with the Spartans being victorious in both. The Beavers are also the last team to beat the Spartans in conference play which happen last year on the same court they battled tonight on. The Spartans had the better game plan as they pushed through a tough opening five minutes where the Beavers were sinking nearly every shot they took. The Spartans would regroup and build a six point lead at the half. The Spartans would lock down defensively as they used a 16-0 run late into the second half building their lead to 21 before finishing the game off with a 16 point victory.

Four Spartans reached double figures in scoring with both Brock Simon and Jaylin McCants each with 18. Bryce Prochaska and Sam Kilburg each added 10 points. Simon lead the Spartans with five assists and Dylan Anderson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Points off turnovers would be a key factor in the win tonight as the Spartans found 21 points off Beaver turnovers compared to only three points for the Beavers. The Spartans finished the game 29-55 (52.7%) from the field and 10-25 (40.0%) from beyond the arc. The Spartans made eight of the 14 attempts at the free-throw line.
