Men's Basketball Captures First Win of Season Against Carroll University

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2022-23 season after defeating the host of the Carroll Classic, Carroll University Pioneers 68-53. 

The Spartans would trail early 9-10 with 15:32 left in the first half, but the following possession by the Spartans resulted in a Dylan Anderson layup which sparked a 13-0 run over a five minute span to lead 22-10 with 10:16 left in the opening half. The Pioneers would chip into the Spartan lead in the final 10 minutes, but the Spartans held a 33-25 lead at the half. 

The Pioneers would cut the lead to five within the first two minutes of the second half, but the Spartans would go on a 22-6 run over the course of 11:40 of play to lead 61-38 which would be their largest lead of the game. The Pioneers trimmed the Spartan lead a bit, but the Spartans would hang on for their first victory of the season, 68-53. 

Jaylin McCants was the leading scorer in the game with 18 points on 6-12 (50%) shooting from the field. Anderson added 11 points and both Sam Kilburg & Keegan Zimmerman scored 10. Brock Simon led the Spartans with 10 boards as well as four assists. 

The Spartans shot 24-62 (38.7%) from the field and 5-16 (31.3%) from the 3-point line. The Spartans were able to knock down 15-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line. The points in the paint battle belonged to the Spartans as they outscored the Pioneers 38-14. Second chance points were a big difference in the game as the Spartans had the edge 20-8. The points off turnovers favored the Spartans with 17 points compared to only five for the Pioneers.

The Spartans will continue their schedule away from home when they travel to Madison, Wis. on Wednesday, November 16 when they take on Edgewood College. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
