Spartans Grab Commanding Win Over Nebraska Wesleyan

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The University of Dubuque men's basketball team took the court this afternoon to host the Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) Prairiewolves inside Stoltz Sports Center. In a game where the whistle was blown frequently, the Spartans were able to control the game and get the commanding victory 84-64 to increase their winning streak to seven games. 

The Spartans and NWU would trade the first four baskets to have an early 4-4 tie. The Spartans would then start to pull away with a 21-12 run to increase their lead to 25-16 with 9:27 left in the first half. The Spartans would expand their lead heading into halftime up 42-29. With many fouls being called in the first half, the Spartans would take advantage where they shot 14-17 (82.4%) from the free throw line in th first half. Starting the second half, Peter Ragen would score the first five Spartan points to increase the Spartan lead to 47-33. The Spartans would continue the second half scoring with ease as they would shoot 12-26 (46.2%) and continued to hit their free throws in the second half to win comfortably 84-64. 

In a game where the Spartans would lead for more than 35 minutes, the theme in the game was the whistle. There would be a total of 46 fouls called and the Spartans took advantage at the free throw line by hitting 28-37 (75.7%), which is the most they have attempted and made in a game this season. Four Spartans would score double figures this afternoon, led by senior Peter Ragen scoring 20, Brock Simon with 14, Dylan Anderson added 12, and Sam Kilburg scored 10. The Spartans would score 19 points on 10 NWU turnovers compared to NWU only scoring one point on seven Spartan turnovers. 

The Spartans will ride their seven game winning streak into Pella, Iowa on Monday night as they take on the Central College Dutch in a makeup game that was postponed earlier this year. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Last time out against the Dutch, the Spartans were able to grab the home victory 76-58.
