Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team hosted the River City Classic this weekend where they would look to gain some momentum in the win column. The Spartans would do exactly that as they would take the win in all four games this weekend. On Friday, the Spartans would start the night off by playing St. Mary's where they would revenge a loss from last week and they would clean sweep the Cardinals 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14). The Spartans were led in kills by
Darby Hawtrey and
Emma Powell with 14 kills each and
Julie May added 8.
Kate Messino led the way with an astounding 34 assists for the Spartans. The second game on Friday night, would be a fun one as the Spartans would grind out an intense five set match where they would come out on top 3-2. UD nearly finished wth three with double digit kills. Hawtrey led with 17 kills trailed closely by Powell with 15 and
Kaylynn Murray who finished with nine and led with 27 set assists. Hawtrey served up five aces and
Julie May earned 14 digs.
On Saturday, the Spartans would start the day off by competing in a back-and-forth battle with Grinnell College and the Spartans would serve out a win in a close knit five set match 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12). The Spartans were led in kills by
Darby Hawtrey and
Emma Powell who added 21 kills apiece.
Kaylynn Murray led the way for the Spartans in assists with 30. Capping off the weekend for the Spartans, they would take on the #15 Carthage College Firebirds. The student section was in full swing for this game as they gave the Spartans energy to close out a five-set nail biter 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 15-12). The Spartans were led by
Darby Hawtrey with 16 kills. Ashlee Adier added 13 and
Julie May had 12,
Emma Powell contributed 11 for the Spartans.
Kaylynn Murray would add 30 assists in the win.
The Spartans face off next Tuesday night against the Wartburg College Knights inside the Stoltz Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.
