Volleyball Battles #10-ranked Knights in Four Sets

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team faced a tough #10-ranked Wartburg College Knights team which entered undefeated a perfect 12-0.  The Spartans celebrating Pride Night in front of a boisterous crowd and the first sighting of the UD Pep Band showcased a match that would bounce back and forth with 23 tie scores and seven lead changes in the four-set match. The Knights held on for the 3-1 win by set scores 30-28, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-20.

UD led set two 18-16 when the Knights called a timeout and the team rallied to win the set. The host Spartans led set three throughout after jumping out to a 6-3 edge early. Wartburg lost the use of their starting setter at 6-3 when she collided with a teammate by the net. She would sit out the rest of set three. UD extended the lead to 13-5 before the Knights called a timeout. Wartburg started to find their mojo after trailing 19-9 to slice UD's lead to 22-17.

The Knights served up back-to-back aces to cut the margin 22-19. The Spartans led 24-21 and scored what looked like the winning point until a meeting of the officials changed their mind and called a replay. A second meeting of the saw the officials reverse that call and instead awarded the point in favor of the Knights to the loud disfavor of the Spartans Proud. UD would capture the set 25-22. In set four, UD trailed 14-17 and called a timeout with the Knights out scoring UD 5-3 before another Spartans timeout. The Knights captured the match by claiming the fourth set 25-20 to improve to 13-0 overall and 2-0 in the American Rivers Conference.

UD will enjoy a week off before they return to A-R-C action against the Coe College Kohawks on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 in Stoltz Sports Center.
