CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team would collect a split with #20-ranked Coe College Kohawks on Friday afternoon. UD captured the first game of the weekend series 2-1, but lost game two, a nine inning contest, by a score of 2-9.
The Kohawks entered on a four game win streak, but the Spartans stopped it with an opening victory after scoring two runs off four hits. The Spartans trailed 0-2 through four innings before knotting the game at 1-1 through five innings. UD would add a run in the sixth and that would be enough for the win.
Shaun Logan earned the win on the mound after tossing a complete seven inning game. He faced 29 batters, allowed no earned runs, struck out four Kohawks while giving up just one walk.
Max Snowden led the offense by going 2-3 at the plate.
Kellen Mitchell and
Patrick Rafferty would each collect a single in the win. The Kohawks committed four errors and errors would allow the Spartans to score a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
The hosts would take out their opening game frustrations in game two as they scored nine runs and finished with 14 hits. This game it was the Spartans defense which allowed four mistakes.
Jordan Nelson suffered the loss after giving up nine runs off 11 hits, only four runs were earned.
A pair of Spartans finished with two hits.
Jake Cekander finished game two going 2-4 and teammate
Kellen Mitchell was 2-3.
Kyle Radi singled in the fifth and sent
Max Snowden and
Patrick Rafferty across the plate for two RBI's.
Zach McCoy would connect for the only extra base hit as leadoff in the top of the ninth inning.
The Spartans continue action on Saturday, April 24 at Bill Quinby Field in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with the final doubleheader of the weekend beginning at 1 p.m.
