Baseball's Miscues too Much to Overcome Against #20 Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball would have their chances against #20 Coe on Saturday afternoon, but would ultimately drop both games of the doubleheader. UD would fall in game one of the doubleheader 5-2, before game two turned into a 15-inning battle in which the Spartans would drop 10-9.

Game One
Game one between the Spartans and Kohawks was not the cleanest of games as the teams combined for five errors and six of seven runs were unearned. That began in the first inning when a UD error on a single to left field allowed the Kohawks to get the scoring started. Another unearned run in the first for the Kohawks and one more each the second and third innings put UD in a 4-0 hole.

In the fifth it was the Spartans turn to be the beneficiary of an error as Colton Pfiefer would reach on a fielding error by the Coe left fielder to bring Cole DeStefanis and Patrick Rafferty home, cutting the Coe lead down to 4-2. This opened the door for a chance at a big inning for the Spartans as there were no outs but the next three Spartan batters would go down and that would be the last time UD would threaten in game one.

Anthony Scanlon got the tough loss on the mound, as just one of his five runs surrendered were earned and gave up just six hits while fanning four Kohawks. The UD offense would not give Scanlon much support as Cole DeStefanis and Patrick Rafferty delivered the lone two hits.

Game Two
In a long list of crazy games this season for the Spartans, game two between UD and Coe might take the top spot. The Kohawks and Spartans would alternate one run frames early with UD's Zach McCoy drilling a home run and Kellen Mitchell coming up with an RBI single to have things all square at 2-2 through three/

Coe plated two runs in the fifth to retake the lead until the eighth, when Kellen Mitchell began things with a bang. Mitchell homered to right center to lead off the inning, bringing UD back within one. Later in the frame, Colton Pfeifer would deliver a deep fly out to the warning track, allowing the tying run to come home for UD, a run that would send the game into extra innings shortly after.

UD missed a chance to take the lead in the 11th but would not waste another opportunity in the 12th. UD drew four straight walks to take the lead, leading to Colton Pfeifer and Jordan Goldstein delivering clutch knocks, both driving home two runs to give UD a 9-4 lead. The Kohawks continued to prove why they are ranked 20th in the country by not going down quietly, putting up a five spot of their own in the 12th with the help of a grand slam to push the game into the 13th.

With daylight running out quickly, the marathon game two contest carried into the 15th inning where UD miscues would prove to be the Spartans downfall. A one out single by the Kohawks quickly moved into scoring position after a wild pitch and would come around to score shortly after by way of a UD error to end the marathon.

Five different Spartans would record two hits in game two and seven different Spartans would score at least one run.

The Spartans will return home to take on the Buena Vista Beavers at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 30th.
