Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second Half Surge Gives UD 2-0 Win Over Central

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After a slow first half, the University of Dubuque women's soccer team clicked on all cylinders in the second half, scoring two late goals for a 2-0 win over Central College.

Central fired off the first seven shots of the first half until the 27th minute when Emma Kober had a shot blocked but the rebound came right to her, leading to an open shot from about 20 yards out but the shot was saved. As the rain picked up as the first half went on, a wet ball limited scoring chances for both teams, sending the game into the break scoreless.

After Central would outshoot UD in the first half 8-5, the Spartans flipped the offensive momentum in the second half, getting six shots off in the first 20 minutes of the half. All those attacks and shots finally paid off for the Spartans in the 74th minute when Emily Gross chased a ball down on the right side and centered a pass into Brooke Brodzinski, who fired a rocket into the left side of the net for the game's first goal.

Hannah Sawyer was firing shots from long range all game long and finally got one to go home from about 25 yards out in the 85th minute to give the Spartans breathing room with a 2-0 lead, where the score would hold over the final five minutes. UD would outshoot Central by a nine to three margin in the second half.

Victoria Roethler battled the wet conditions perfectly for all 90 minutes, pitching another shutout with four saves.

The Spartans turn around and travel to Luther on Tuesday, April. 13. The women will be the second game of the doubleheader with a 7:30 p.m. start.
