Women's Soccer Slowed by Knights

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team hosted the Wartburg Knights on Tuesday night in an American Rivers Conference battle, falling to the Knights 1-0 after an early chance off the crossbar would not find it's way home.

In a physical battle between conference rivals, the two best scoring opportunities in the first half for the Spartans came on two free kicks in the first seven minutes of action. Both came from almost the exact same location about 20 yards out on the front right side of the box but Brooke Brodzinksi's attempts would sail just high on the first attempt and took a fingertip save to stop the second..Those accounted for two of four first half shots for UD, while Wartburg fired off 10 first half shots but came out of the half scoreless as well.

Wartburg came out in the second half as the aggressor, getting two quick shots off a corner kick in early minutes of the second half but UD goalie Victoria Roethler held strong to keep the game scoreless. Roethler was only able to keep the Knights off the scoreboard for so long. In the 62nd minutes, the Knights got loose on the right side of the box and sent a low cross into the middle of the box for a one timer and the first goal of the game. After four shots in the first half, the Spartans could only break through for one shot in the second half and could not manage a goal for the second straight game.

Roethler got the tough luck loss in the net, recording 11 saves in 90 minutes. The physical game featured 19 fouls and three yellow cards.

A-R-C play rolls along on Saturday when the Spartans make the trek to Lincoln, Neb. to take on Nebraska Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
