ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The University of Dubuque Spartans volleyball team headed south for a Friday night match-up with the Vikings of Augustana College. The Spartans were looking to get back in the win column, but the Vikings would be too much as the Spartans would fall in a five-set match (25-21. 25-18, 21-25, 23-25, 8-15).
The Spartans couldn't have asked for a better start despite struggling to hit with a .146 percentage in the first set but was able to take the set 25-21. In set two, the Spartans were able to jump out to a 10-4 lead to force an early Augustana timeout. The Spartans wouldn't look back and they would take set two 25-18. In the third set, the script was flipped as Augustana would get momentum back on their side as they would just out hit the Spartans enough to take set three 25-21. In set four, both teams would go back and forth. The score would be tied at 22 when the Spartans would take a timeout. After the timeout, the Vikings would then go on to win the close set by a score of 25-23. In the winner take all fifth set, the Spartans did not have an answer as the Vikings would lead from the start and control the set as they take the set 15-8 and the match.
The Spartans were led tonight by
Emma Powell who tallied 17 kills and
Alexis Bedier would follow just behind with 12.
Kate Messino had an outstanding night as she would add an amazing 47 assists to lead the way for the Spartans.
Katie Wright had 29 digs tonight to lead the team.
The Spartans have a quick turn around as they return home for a homecoming day match-up with the UW-River Falls Falcons inside the Stoltz Sports Center tomorrow, October 16 at 11:00 a.m.
