Men's Soccer Remain Perfect in A-R-C in Battled Tested Storm

DUBUQUE, IA – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team was in action tonight looking to maintain their American Rivers Conference undefeated record in tack against the Simpson College Storm at Oyen Field. The Spartans would have to battle in the trenches tonight and grind out a very aggressive and up-tempo contest from the visiting Storm. They would prevail in the end and capture their 5th win in conference play to remain at the top of the standings (5-0) with a 2-0 win.

In the first half, the Spartans would have multiple opportunities to find the back of the net, but the luck was not on their side as they would struggled to score a goal in the opening 45 minutes of play. The aggressive Spartan defense held the Storm in check to enter halftime knotted at 0-0.

In the second half, the action would pick up the pace. In the 58th minute, the Storm would block a shot by the Spartans with their hand which resulted in a yellow card and a penalty kick for the Spartans. Lucas Von Braun would be the one to take the penalty kick and he would be successful as the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead. After the Spartans scored, the referees would be busy as the physical play on the field would tally six yellow cards and a red card after the contest ended. UD's defense held strong in the final moments of the game when the Storm attacked with a flurry of shots from the box, corner kicks, and rebounds.

In the final seconds of play, UD would tack on another goal thanks to a steal by Gloire Luwara. He passed it around to Eloi Niyibizi and Roody Joinvil, and into Darren Gray, who would be streaking down the middle of the box to find the back of the net to seal the win for the Spartans with only 18 seconds remaining in the game. The Spartans would take this one by a final score of 2-0.

The Spartans were led tonight by four shots on goal from Eloi Niyibizi. In total, the Spartans would be accurate with their shots as they added 11 shots on goal with eight of them on goal. Christoffer Rastock got the win tonight giving up zero goals and had three saves.

The Spartans next contest is Saturday, October 16 when they travel to Storm Lake, Iowa to play the Beavers of Buena Vista University at 8:00 p.m.
