Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Aidan Neil

Women’s Soccer Win on Oyen Field 2-1

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team returned home for the first time in two weeks to play the UW-Platteville Pioneers. The game swung back and forth in momentum, but the Spartans battled through and capitalized on their chances to earn a 2-1 win on home turf.

In the first half, both teams had strong opportunities, with Ava Hortillosa having two attempts saved early in the game. Amelia Pash had her attempt on target saved late in the first half with a first-time attempt off a volley. Samantha Jurgens held the Pioneers scoreless with five saves in the first half to keep the score even heading into the second period of play.

Bree Swenson got the second half started for the Spartans with her attempt just a minute into play, forcing a diving save from the goalkeeper. Shortly after, in the 52nd minute, the Spartans set up for a corner kick routine. On the set play, Claire Husnick swung the ball into the box where it found the head of Sarah Thompson in a great position. Thompson gave the keeper no time to react and sent the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. As the game time ticked down, the Pioneers pressed UD's backline, but that pressure gave a great opportunity for counterattacks. Olivia Roth capitalized on this chance with a great solo run down the middle, cutting left past the final defender and placing the ball with power into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers scored late, but it wasn't enough as the Spartans' defense held firm in the final minutes to close out the game and win 2-1.

Olivia Roth and Sarah Thompson led the team with a goal each, Roth's being the game-winner. Claire Husnick had one assist in the game. Ava Hortillosa and Roth each led the team in shots with three apiece. Samantha Jurgens played another great game in goal with eight saves for the night.
