PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Dubuque football team faced one of America's top football teams in #4 ranked UW-Platteville Pioneers. The Spartans struggled to find some offense and finished with just two first downs in a 0-59 defeat at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Spartans started the game on a positive when the kickoff to UW-P was returned for 22 yards before the Spartans defense forced a fumble and recovered by linebacker
Mike Westbrooks on UW-P's 26 yard line. The drive ended on an interception at the Pioneer's 24 yard line. UD's defense stepped up once again and held UW-P to a three down series and they punted to the Spartans 23 yard line. The host Pioneers would score twice in the first quarter to take an early lead 14-0. They added 21 second half points to enter the halftime locker room wih a commanding 35-0 lead. The second half they added 21 points in the third quarter before being held to just three points in the final 15 minutes of action in the final 59-0 score.
The Spartans were held to five rushing yards and 20 passing yards in the loss.
Lawrence Wells completed 2-6 pass attempts for 18 yards and
Armon Holmes was 1-7 for two yards.
Peter Lee Jr. rushed for four yards on four carries,
Kali Freeman ran once for three yards, Wells ran the ball 11 times for two yards,
Isaiah Diblich ran twice for two yards and Noah Rolling ran twice for two yards. Freeman caught two passes for 17 yards and
Zach Powell caught a pass for three yards.
Defensively
Trey Roberson finished with 10 tackles,
Ben Egan had nine tackles,
Dre Jarvis finished with six tackles, and
Giovanni Rivera ended the afternoon with five tackles.In special teams,
Brady Buchmann punted nine times for 363 yards (40.3 avg.) finished the afternoon with two punts over 50 yards and landed one inside the 20 yard line.
Dre Jarvis returned two kick offs for 38 yards and
Mekyael Hall returned one for 19 yards.
Bennett Harp kicked off once for 61 yards.
The Spartans will enjoy a week off next week before returning home to host McMurray University from Abilene, Texas on Saturday, Sept. 26 on Senior Day at Chalmers Field.
