Men's Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Thunder

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team opened up their season against the Wheaton College (IL) Thunder on Tuesday evening, where the Thunder scored three times in the opening half to go on and win by a final score of 4-1 at Oyen Field.

The Thunder were able to score twice in the first 15 minutes before UD was able to settle in and had their first scoring opportunity in the 20th minute, but Jameson Carl just missed a goal to cut the Thunder lead in half. The Thunder were able to manage another goal in the 23rd minute to go up 3-0 at the half.

After the break, the Thunder scored their fourth of the night within the first five minutes of the second half, before the Spartans were able to get more aggressive on their attacking third. In the 60th minute, Carl connected on the Spartans' first goal of the season from a free kick by Brady Wagner. Carl's goal tonight was his first as a Spartan, and he finished with a team-high four shots.

Riley Johnson played all 90 minutes in goal and had five saves.

The Spartans will hit the road, traveling up to play UW-Stevens Point on Friday, September 7. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
