Box Score 2 The University of Dubuque women's tennis team opened their season with a home sweep of Edgewood University by a 6-1 score and beat Lawrence University 6-1. The weather forced the team to begin inside the dry confines of the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center before the sun broke out in mid-afternoon allowing the opening weekend a chance to finish outside on the Frank Farber Tennis Courts. The Spartans improved to 2-0 overall and captured their first wins over the two schools.
The Spartans women's tennis team jumped out early in both matches to grab the doubles point and the early lead. The Spartans featured some new faces and also some returners who moved around in the line-up for head coach
Chad Fenwick. The #2 doubles team of
Sarah Wilde and
Jayda Floyd would both finish 2-0 along with the #3 doubles team of
Adriana Benavente and
Maddie Brosnahan. Their vctories helped locked in the doubles point after collecting two out of the three sets for the Spartans.
"I'm very proud of the way we played today," commented head coach
Chad Fenwick. "We had some close matches which we battled through. I am especially pleased with our doubles play on opening weekend."
Next week, the Spartans hit the road for a doubleheader. They will first play Marian University on Saturday, Sept. 5 at noon before facing Ripon College at 3:00 p.m. UD will open American Rivers Conference action on Sept. 12 when they travel to Wartburg College to play the Knights in Waverly, Iowa.
