DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team celebrated 14 seniors during their Senior Day doubleheader against Wartburg College on Friday. The Spartans dropped both games to the Knights.
Game One
Wartburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead early thanks to three unearned runs. The Spartans scored two runs in the second inning thanks to a triple from Tanner Simmons and an RBI walk from Justin Potts. Wartburg plated three more runs in the fifth inning and Alex Esser laced a double to make the score 7-3 after five innings. The Spartans scored five in the sixth, with three runs scoring on a triple from Will Sullivan. Sullivan scored on an errant throw, giving the Spartans an 8-7 lead. Wartburg scored three more in the eighth, and the Spartans fell 10-8.
Esser, Sullivan, and Vic Pico all tallied multiple hits during the game. Sullivan went 2-4 with three RBI, a hit by pitch, and a triple. Both of Esser's hits were doubles, while Turner stole two bases and Simmons laced a triple.
Shae Buskohl pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits while walking four and striking out two. Dominic Pelizza was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits across three innings.
Game Two
Wartburg scored three unearned runs in the first inning, taking an early lead. Ashr Harris and Potts traded doubles, cutting the deficit to two in the third inning. Wartburg extended their lead back to three in the next half inning. Turner drove in a run via sacrifice fly, but Wartburg tacked on again in the sixth inning. Wartburg added another run late and the game ended 6-2.
Miguel Esquivez went 2-3 with a double while Zavion Ingram went 2-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, and a triple. Potts, Harris, and Donald Kennedy all crushed doubles during the game.
Despite a strong performance, Angel Reyes was tagged with the loss after tossing four innings and allowing one earned run, striking out four and walking three. Seniors Connor Lyons and Colton Karczewski both threw multiple innings in relief, each allowing one run.
