PELLA, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team scored 15 unanswered runs in a 17-6 rout of Central College on Friday afternoon. Will Sullivan gave the Spartans the lead in the seventh with a three-run blast to center field, his fourth of the season.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the second inning when Zavion Ingram and Alex Esser notched back-to-back doubles, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Brady Buchmann plated another run in the third on a safety squeeze, extending the lead to 2-0. The Dutch clawed back, tying the game with runs in the third and fourth innings. The Dutch would tack on in the fifth, building a 6-2 lead. The Spartans took the lead for good, scoring six runs in the seventh inning thanks to singles from Esser and Ashr Harris, a double from Ryan Turner, and a three-run shot from Sullivan. After Jaden Marcus induced an inning-ending double play in the seventh inning, Dominic Pelizza tossed a scoreless eighth inning. The Spartans piled on runs in the ninth inning on singles from Vic Pico, Esser, and Turner, plus doubles from Sullivan and Donald Kennedy. All told, the Spartans sent 13 hitters to the plate and scored nine runs. Matthew Risser tossed a scoreless ninth as the Spartans won 17-6.
Sullivan went 2-4 with five RBI, two walks, three runs scored, a double and a home run. Esser went 3-5 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a double. Ingram went 2-5 with an RBI, a walk, two runs scored, and two doubles. Pico finished the day with two hits, two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases. Potts also collected multiple hits with a 2-5 game, walking once and scoring twice while crushing a double. Off the bench, Kennedy drove a double and walked, scoring once. Cade Reisner also came into the game to run and stole home, stretching the Spartans' lead.
Angel Reyes started for the Spartans, going 4.1 innings and allowing ten hits and six runs while walking one and striking out two. Josh Rogde collected the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless frames, allowing three hits and striking out two. Marcus, Pelizza, and Risser all threw scoreless innings to close the game.
