DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball opened American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action on Wednesday, April 1 during Faculty Appreciation Day. Dr. Adam Hoffman, vice president for academic affairs, tossed out the opening pitch... a perfect strike to kick off the doubleheader. The Spartans were swept by the Luther College Norse 10-2 in six innings in both games. UD scored two runs off four hits, but committed a game high five errors in the game one loss. In the second game, UD scored two runs off of eight hits and committed three errors.
In the opener, UD struggled to find hits with six Spartans held to no hits.
Lauren Jacobs was the lone Spartans an extra base hit, a triple in the first inning. She was 1-3 in the box with an RBI.
Megan Leick had the only other RBI which also happened in the first inning when she singled to right field and scored Jacobs.
Ashlyn Short suffered her first loss of the season after 2.2 innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs after facing 21 batters.
Ciaran Rigby came in for relief and went 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs after facing 18 batters.
The second game Luther jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning. They added two runs in the third and broke the game open in the five run fifth inning and ended the game early after adding a pair of runs in the sixth inning.
Megan Leick went 2-3 with a double and had an RBI. Three other Spartans collected doubles in the loss:
Lauren Jacobs,
Amber Wisely, and
Zoe Connell.
Skylar Zoeteman took the loss after allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 4.2 innings.
Ciaran Rigby came in for relief and allowed two hits and two earned runs in 1.1 innings. The Spartans turned one double play in the second game.
UD will travel down highway 20 to play a doubleheader in Storm Lake, Iowa vs. the Buena Vista University Beavers on Saturday, April 4 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Weather does not look good for Easter Weekend, so watch the website for any weather updates. UD will face the #13-ranked Simpson College Storm in Indianola, Iowa on April 7 beginning at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 11 the Spartans host the Loras College Duhawks in a doubleheader on NFCA Strikeout Cancer Day and UD Alumni Day beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 12 the Spartans return to the road to play #20-ranked Central College Dutch in Pella, Iowa with doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.Â
