Men’s Lacrosse Jumps Ahead Early Before NACC Favorite Rallies for Win

MONTGOMERY, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team led 6-2 through the first 15 minutes of the game over the NACC preseason favorite, the Spartans of Aurora University. Aurora would go on to control the final three quarters to defeat UD 24-9 on Wednesday evening. 

Chris Wilson scored the games' first goal 43 seconds in with an unassisted goal to give UD the early lead. Both teams traded a pair of goals through the first six and a half minutes of the opening quarter as Tyler Johnson scored UD's second of the game. After Aurtora tied the game at 2-all UD would then score four unanswered goals, three coming from Cambell Smith, including two in a row to make it 6-2 in favor of UD after one quarter.

Aurora opened the second quarter with their own 4-0 spurt to tie the game again at 6-all with 8:50 remaining before the half. Nate Richardson would stop the Aurora run at the 7:12 mark to give UD the lead back. Aurora used another four unanswered goal spurt to lead 11-7 at the half.

Aurora would extend their lead in the second half to put the game away. UD got goals from Peter Schiess on a man-up opportunity in the third quarter, as well as Smith's fourth goal of the game coming in the closing minutes of the fourth.

Smith tied a game-high with four goals scored, while Wilson was the other UD player with multiple goals with two. 

The Spartans were hurt on Aurora man-up opportunities as they went a perfect 7-7, whereas UD was 1-3. 

Nolan Nagy played the first three quarters tonight and collected 12 saves. Ethan Branscom played the final quarter and added eight saves.

UD is now 4-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

UD will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Mequon, Wis. to face the Concordia University (WI) Falcons at 12:00 p.m. on April 4.
