GRINNELL, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team playing in nearly ideal conditions on Wednesday, captured a sweep of the Grinnell College Pioneers by winning game one 20-12 and earning a sweep with a victory in game two 4-3. UD set a new school record for runs in a game during the opener with 20, breaking the previous mark set a year ago of 19 runs.
The Spartans went over the century mark on Wednesday for the season run total. UD currently has 107 runs scored in just 16 games into the season. UD's top four hitters all have double digit RBI's for head coach
Kristen Duross.
UD scored 20 runs off 14 hits and committed two errors. The host Grinell College Pioneers scored 12 runs off 13 hits and committed a pair of errors in the loss.
Lauren Jacobs led the offense by going 3-5 at the plate with a season high five RBI's.
Jamie Motley was 2-3 with four RBI's (a career high),
Megan Leick was 2-5 with three RBI's,
Anna Luczak was 2-3 with two RBI's, and
Adalynn Ridgeway was 2-3 with and RBI. Leick collected the game's lone triple,
Lauren Jacobs had a pair of doubles,
Kaitlyn Powell,
Anna Luczak,
Amber Wisely, and
Jamie Motley all finished with a double.
Ciaran Rigby earned the win after tossing five complete innings, allowing eight earned runs while striking out three, and faced 34 batters.
Sklyar Zoeteman came in for relief and threw the final two innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs to collect a save.
The nightcap was much closer, UD scored four runs off 10 hits and made three miscues, Grinnell scored three runs off five hits and committed an error. UD's 10 hits were all singles and Grinnell's five hits were all singles.
Megan Leick went 3-4 at the plate and
Adalynn Ridgeway was 2-3. Five other Spartans added singles in the win.
Ashlyn Short improved to 5-0 with a complete seven inning contest where she faced 29 batters, struck out four, walked one, and allowed just one earned run. She tossed 82 pitches with 56 being strikes for UD.
The Spartans return home to host the Cornell College Rams on Saturday, March 28 for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on the UD softball field.
