Powell Becomes All-Time Career Hits Leader in Softball's Sunday Sweep of Beavers

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team collected the Sunday sweep of the Blackburn College Beavers winning 6-4 in game one and 7-3 in game two and increased their win streak to five for head coach Kristen Duross.

Kaitlyn Powell entered Sunday tied for second of career hits with 145, she tied leader Amber Meyer (2011-14) with 146 on a single to left field as the lead off in the first inning. She was walked in the bottom of the third and became the school's all-time hits leader with a double down the right field line in the fourth inning with 147. She ended the day with three more hits in the second game to stretch her career hits to 150. Powell was 2-3 with two RBI's in game one and nad was 3-4 in game two and ended the afternoon with a pair of doubles and a pair of triples.

The Spartans scored six runs off 10 hits in the opener and committed an error. Blackburn scored four runs off seven hits and committed an error. Blackburn left six runners on base and UD left seven runners stranded. Powell and Megan Leick each earned a double and Adalynn Ridgeway had the Spartans lone triple in the win after going 2-3 at the plate with two RBI's. Leick went 2-4 with two RBI's and Anna Luczak was 2-3 and scored once.

Ciaran Rigby threw a complete seven inning game, struck out two with no walks, and allowed just two earned runs to improve to 2-3 on the season.

In the second game, UD scored seven runs off 12 hits and played errorless. The Spartans left six runners on base and the visiting Beavers left just three on base. UD's top three in the line-up all finished with three hits. Leadoff Powell went 3-4 and scored three times. Amber Wisely was 3-4 at the plate with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Lauren Jacobs batting third was 3-4 with two triples, four RBI's and two runs scored. Kadence Ondrey was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.

Ashlyn Short improved to 4-0 on the mound after a complete seven innings contest with four strike outs and no walks. She faced 27 batters and allowed eight hits and just three earned runs.

The Spartans busy schedule continues on Wednesday, March 25 when they travel to face Grinnell College in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. before returning home on Saturday, March 28 when UD hosts the Cornell College Rams in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. UD hits the road on Monday, March 30 with they play a doubleheader at UW-La Crosse beginning at 3:00 p.m. UD will open their American Rivers Conference season on Wednesday, April 1 with Teacher Appreciation Game doubleheader when the Luther College Norse journey to Dubuque beginning at 2:00 p.m.
