Softball Splits with Pioneers in Home Opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball returned from the 80 degree weather of Florida to host their home opener on Tuesday, March 10 vs. the UW-Platteville Pioneers. The Spartans lost the opener of the doubleheader 11-8, but responded to take a shortened game two in the fifth inning by a 5-3 margin after game was called for lightning and darkness.

The Spartans returned from spring break with a 5-3 overall record, but began the season 5-0. In the first game, UD scored eight runs off five hits and committed an error. The visiting Pioneers scored 11 runs off 18 hits and also committed an error. Both teams left eight runners on base in the offense dominated contest.

Zoe Connell led the Spartans by finishing the game 2-2 at the plate and had the team's only double. Kaitlyn Powell was 1-3 at the plate with two RBI's with a triple. Ciaran Rigby took the loss after facing 36 batters with 3K's, two walks, and six earned runs.

In game two, UD added four runs to the scoreboard in the first inning and another run in the third. The Pioneers scored all three of their runs in the second inning. The Spartans scored five runs off six hits and committed a pair of errors. UW-P finished with three runs off eight hits and played errorless. UD left four runners on base and UD's defense held seven runners on base in the nightcap. The lightning detector lit up in the middle of the fifth inning which started a 30 minute delay, another reset for lightning and the game was called for darkness with the host Spartans collecting the win.

Amber Wisely was 1-1 with a double and an RBI. Anna Luczak was 1-2 with 2RBI's. Payton Santore was 1-3, with a double and Kadence Ondrey went 1-2 with am RBI. Capturing the victory on the mound was Ashlyn Short (2-0 overall), she faced 25 batters and had 1K, 0 walks, and allowed two earned runs.

UD will travel to Beloit College in Beloit, Wis. for their next doubleheader on March 21 beginning at 1:00/3:00 p.m. UD will open American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday, April 1 when they host the Luther College Norse at 2:00/4:00 p.m.
