APPLETON, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's hockey team wrapped up playing the second of two games against Lawrence University Saturday afternoon. The Spartans ran off with all six points from the Vikings with a 2-1 win, sweeping them in the two-game series.
The Spartans got after the Vikings, smothering them in the first period, getting 14 shots to Lawrence's four. With the shot disparity, it was only a matter of time before UD scored, and in the final minute of the first period, Malia Tetreault cut past a defender and, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, scored with a well-placed shot to put the Spartans up 1-0. Bree Hallson was credited with the assisted as the Spartans went into the break with the lead.
The second period continued UD's dominant play when Madilynn Schiile chased after the puck as it was sent into the attacking half. It was Natalie Meeder who got to it and passed it in to Schiile, who was in excellent position to score the second goal of the game and build the lead to 2-0. Ashleigh Eldridge and Meeder were credited with the assists for the second goal.
The third period was the final stretch, and the Spartans managed to hold on. The Vikings scored late but were unable to break UD's resolve, as the Spartans won 2-1.
Malia Tetreault and Madilynn Schiile led the Spartans with a goal each, with assists from Bree Hallson, Natalie Meeder and Ashleigh Eldridge. Meeder led the team in shots with seven on goal. Natalie Post won the most faceoffs for the team with 12. Defensively, Alexandria Simmons had four blocks. Emily Skanron had a great day in goal with 31 saves, posting a .969 save percentage.
