Women's Soccer Celebrate Senior Day with a 2-1 win over the Storm

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team faced the Simpson College Storm as the Spartans celebrated Senior Day. It was an afternoon of celebration as the Spartans took down the Storm 2-1 with goals from Bree Swenson and Chloe Westerfeld. UD improves to 9-5-2 overall and 5-1-0 in conference.

To start the first half, UD attacked and created some pressure on Simpson. As the game progressed, both teams settled into the match and started trading blows. It was the Storm that struck first with a goal at 20:35. With the 1-0 deficit, the Spartans pressed the issue and 15 minutes after falling behind, they found the equalizer. In the 36th minute, from a corner kick by Claire Husnick, it was Chloe Westerfeld who found the final touch to even the score before halftime.

With everything to play for in this second period, both teams came out with a renewed sense of energy. The Storm gained the advantage, controlling the ball well, but the Spartans' defense stood strong to keep them from finding the back of the net once again. Striking fast when the opportunity presented itself, the Spartans capitalized on those chances late in the 80th minute. The ball was crossed into the box and bounced around as Storm defenders tried to clear it, but Bree Swenson got the better of them, striking first and scoring the game-winning goal. The Spartans outshot the Storm 15-12 and won the game 2-1 on Senior Day.

Chloe Westerfeld and Bree Swenson led the Spartans, scoring a goal each. Claire Husnick earned her seventh assist this season. Samantha Jurgens made two saves to help limit the Storm.
