Men’s Soccer Win Battle of Unbeatens with 3-0 Shutout of Wartburg Knights

Waverly, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team traveled to face the Wartburg College Knights in a showdown between two teams that entered the game undefeated in conference play. The Spartans delivered a statement performance, scoring three goals while keeping the Knights off the scoreboard. With a commanding 3-0 victory, UD kept its undefeated conference season alive and moved one step closer to its ultimate goal.

The game kicked off at 7:30 p.m. in Waverly, and from the start, it was clear why both teams entered the matchup undefeated in conference play. The Spartans and Knights traded possession during the opening 15 minutes, with neither side creating any significant chances. In the 20th minute, the Spartans earned a free kick, an opportunity the Knights knew they could not afford to give UD too often, given the Spartans' strength on set pieces. Once again, UD made them pay. At 19:43, the Spartans delivered the free kick into the box, where the ball dropped into a crowded area. With neither team initially able to locate it, Ryder Syverson managed to play the ball to Luka Tomic, who made no mistake in front of goal. The Defender of the Week scored his sixth goal of the season, an impressive total for the central midfielder. Following the opening goal, the game settled into a back-and-forth contest, with both teams moving the ball well but struggling to create dangerous opportunities. The Spartans remained organized defensively and took their 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The second half continued much like the first, with both teams trading possession. However, the Knights began to find their rhythm and pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Despite the increased pressure, most of Wartburg's chances came from long-range efforts that never seriously threatened the Spartans goal. UD remained composed defensively, doing an outstanding job of protecting its lead while creating opportunities of its own to extend the advantage. In the 71st minute, a Spartans attacker dribbled into the penalty area before being brought down by a Knights defender, earning UD a penalty kick. Conference-leading goal scorer Jameson Carl stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, firing a powerful shot into the top-right corner. Carl's goal at 71:15 extended the Spartans lead to 2-0. With plenty of time remaining, the Spartans were not finished. At 79:18, UD struck again to put the game out of reach. Following a brief mistake by the Wartburg goalkeeper, Andre Elinoff capitalized on the opportunity, finding the back of the net to make it 3-0. The Knights were unable to respond in the closing minutes as the Spartans comfortably saw out the victory. With the 3-0 win, UD emerged as the only team still undefeated in conference play, taking a significant step toward its goal of capturing the conference title.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Luka Tomic, Jameson Carl, and Andre Elinoff, who each scored a goal in the important victory. Ryder Syverson added an assist on Tomic's opening goal. In goal, Riley Johnson stepped up once again when it mattered most, recording five saves to earn the shutout and help the Spartans secure the 3-0 win.
