Men’s Soccer Secures Share of A-R-C Conference Title with Senior Day Win Over Simpson College

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style on Saturday, earning a crucial victory over Simpson College to secure at least a share of the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) title. After a nervous first half, the Spartans found their rhythm after the break, dominating the second half and scoring three goals to seal the 3-0 win. With at least a share of the conference championship secured, UD now has the opportunity to claim the title outright on Tuesday when the Spartans face the Loras College Duhawks in a highly anticipated showdown.

From the opening whistle, the importance of the game was evident, as the Spartans appeared to feel the pressure of the moment. With a share of the conference title on the line, UD needed some time to settle into the game and calm the nerves. The first half saw both teams trade possession, but neither side managed to create a clear-cut scoring opportunity. The tension was noticeable throughout the half, with every attack carrying added significance. The Spartans had some promising opportunities from free kicks and corner kicks but were unable to capitalize. On the other side, the Storm managed one or two shots from outside the box, though none seriously threatened the Spartans goal. After a tightly contested first half with few clear chances on either side, the teams headed into the break level at 0-0.

The second half showcased the qualities that have made the Spartans so successful throughout conference play: quick attacks, a strong defensive presence, and a constant threat on set pieces. It took UD just 10 minutes after the break to finally break the deadlock in this crucial matchup. At 55:07, Jake Polacek collected the ball along the end line just outside the Storm penalty area and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. A Simpson defender attempted to clear the ball but failed to make clean contact, allowing it to fall at the feet of Andre Elinoff, who made no mistake in front of goal to give the Spartans the important 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, UD struck again to double its advantage. Elias Johansson delivered a cross from the right side into the penalty area, where Polacek laid the ball off with a single touch to Jameson Carl. The conference-leading goal scorer calmly finished the opportunity, putting the Spartans firmly in control at 2-0. With the second goal, the Spartans appeared to shake off any remaining nerves and took complete control of the game. UD continued to defend well while looking dangerous going forward, leaving Simpson with few opportunities to get back into the contest. Then came the moment that made Senior Day even more special. At 81:56, senior attacker, captain, and team leader Eddie Papis found the back of the net with a shot from outside the box that took a deflection off a Storm defender before rolling into the goal. Scoring his second goal of the season on Senior Day made the moment even more memorable, and the celebration reflected just how much he means to this team. The Spartans comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure a convincing 3-0 victory over Simpson. With the win, UD guaranteed itself at least a share of the American Rivers Conference title and now has the opportunity to claim the championship outright on Tuesday in the final game of the regular season against the Loras College Duhawks.

Leading the way for the Spartans on this crucial Senior Day were three goal scorers: Andre Elinoff, Jameson Carl, and senior captain Eddie Papis, who each found the back of the net in the 3-0 victory. Elias Johansson and Jake Polacek each contributed an assist. In goal, Riley Johnson once again delivered a strong performance, recording three saves to secure the shutout and help the Spartans claim at least a share of the American Rivers Conference title.
