Softball Splits, Gives Knights First A-R-C Loss

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball continued American Rivers Conference play on Tuesday. The Spartans lost game one 5-3 to the visiting Wartburg College Knights, but rallied back and dominated game two, winning 10-1 in five innings.

The Spartans scored three runs off nine hits and committed two errors in the game one loss. The Knights scored five runs off nine hits and committed one error. UD left eight runners on base while Wartburg stranded five. Ally Gullette tossed the complete seven inning game and gave up just three earned runs, struck out three after facing 31 batters.

Offensively Megan Leick went 3-4 at the plate, scored a run an had an RBI. Kaitlyn Powell and Lauren Jacobs both went 2-3 at the plate with Powell grabbing the team's lone triple in the loss. Madison Taeger had one hit, but scored a pair of RBI's.

The second game was all Spartans and they ended the game in five innings. UD put up five runs in the first, a run in the third, and four runs in the fourth and allowed just a run in the third to the Knights. UD scored 10 runs off 10 hits and committed an error. Wartburg scored one run in five hits and committed two errors.

Ciaran Rigby earned the five inning victory after allowing one earned run, struck out one and faced 24 batters. A trio of Spartans capped off the afternoon with two hits each. Bella Allison went 2-2 and scored a run; Lauren Jacobs went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBi; and Katie Hayes was 2-3 with a game high 4 RBI's. UD left just two runners on base, but forced the Knights into leaving eight runners on base in the loss. Katie Hayes, Zoe Connell, and Audrey Morris finished with a double.

The Spartans (15-9 overall, 4-4 in the A-R-C) will face non-conference UW-Platteville (13-7 overall) on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers have lost their last four games to Simpson College and Central College of the American Rivers Conference. UD will play the next next six games on the road before returning home on April 17 when they host Beloit College in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
