DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team defeated the Loras College Duhawks in the series finale on Tuesday. The Spartans and Duhawks concluded the series with a doubleheader at Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field this afternoon and Loras won the series 2-1 over the Spartans.
In the series finale, the Spartans won 7-3 and picked up their first win over the Duhawks since April 19, 2022, ending a 10-game losing streak. Before the win in the second game of the doubleheader, the Spartans had lost four straight one-run games against the Duhawks.
In game one of the doubleheader, Aidan Elfering broke open a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a solo home run to left-center to give the Spartans their first lead. The Duhawks responded in the fourth with a solo home run of their own to tie the game 2-2. Elfering picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to left field to tie the game for the third time at 3-3 in the fifth inning. The Duhawks scored the game-winning run in the top of the sixth on a bases-loaded single. The Spartans only managed one hit after the Duhawks regained the lead.
Loras took an early lead in game two 2-0 before an enormous third inning by the Spartans where they managed four runs in the inning, scoring every run with two outs on four consecutive hits to take a 4-2 lead. Dubuque native, Will Sullivan added to the Spartan's lead in the seventh inning with a big hit to right field that cleared the fence for his first home run of his career.
Tyson Dent finished with five RBIs in the doubleheader, going 4-8 at the plate. Elfering was hot at the plate, recording six hits in nine plate appearances. Jake Cekander, Cameron Pratt, and Will Sullivan all had multiple hits today.
The Spartans are 12-12 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
