Baseball Falls Short 4-3 in Road Series Opener

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team fell short in a 4-3 game to open the road series with the Wartburg College Knights on Friday night.

After a 2-0 deficit through four innings, the Spartans finally got a spark offensively with a three run fifth inning that featured six of their 10 hits for the game. The Spartans got three runs off RBI singles in the inning with only one out to take the lead, but stranded the bases loaded on consecutive outs to end the threat for more runs.

Wartburg tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Jake Cekander had a two-hit night to lead the way offensively. Aidan Elfering pitched seven innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits. He also had another double digit strikeout performance with 10 on the night.

The Spartans drop to 12-13 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
