DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team hosted senior day on Friday with a doubleheader on against the (RV) Buena Vista University Beavers to start their final home series of the season. The Spartans would take game one 7-1 before falling 10-6 in game two. Both teams will go for the series win tomorrow.
Charlie Jaeger was stellar on the mound in game one after a seven inning performance where he allowed only two hits and struck out 11 batters.
Jake Cekander finished the final two innings allowing only one hit to close out the game.
The Beavers only run of the game in the series opener came by way of an error on the Spartans that led to the first run of the game in the third inning. The Spartans were able to quickly tie the game in the bottom of the inning off a fielder's choice. The Spartans had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. The Spartans got their second run of the game yet again off a fielder's choice play and then was able to extend their lead to 3-1 later in the inning off of a wild pitch by the Beavers pitcher.
Aidan Elfering had two runners in scoring position when he hit a double to left center to score two more runs for the Spartans, extending their lead to 5-1.
Micah O'Neal had his own two RBI hit in the seventh inning off a single up the middle to give the give the game its final score of 7-1.
In game two, Spartan errors would be costly as seven of the Beavers 10 runs in the game were unearned runs. After the Beavers held a 10-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Spartans made the game interesting late after five walks and a hit led to four runs to make the game 10-6 with the tying run at the plate with two outs. The threat would end with a strikeout to end the game.
The Spartans are now 16-18 overall and 8-12 in conference play.
