Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Norse on Cancer Awareness Game, Wins Series 2-1

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque split the doubleheader on Saturday against the Luther College Norse to win their first conference series of the season. The Spartans picked up a shutout victory in game one before falling in 10 innings in game two.

The Spartans made today their Cancer Awareness game that featured Everett Redman, who is the son of assistant baseball coach Andrew Redman. Everett is battling a form of brain cancer and is on the road to recovery. The baseball team and their families put together a donation as well as making shirts that show they are all #EverettStrong.

Game 1
The Spartans scored five runs in the sixth inning as both Zavion Ingram and JD Schaffer had RBI singles. Aidan Elfering was phenomenal on the mound for the Spartans, pitching seven innings of shutout baseball and allowing only six hits. Elfering recorded nine strikeouts in 26 batters faced. Josh Rogde finished the final two innings, allowing a hit and striking out three.

Game 2
With the score 1-1 after two innings, the Norse took their first lead of the game 3-1 after a two-run homerun. The Norse would then score three runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-1. The Spartans offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth after four hits led to five runs to tie the game. Jake Cekander brought the Spartans to within 6-5 and nearly tied the game after a bases clearing double off the right field fence, mere feet from a game-tying grand slam. The Spartans would end up tying the game at six-all after two consecutive wild pitches by the Norse pitcher.

The Norse took the lead back in the top of the ninth inning off a their second two-run homerun of the game to lead 8-6. Down to their final three outs, the Spartans responded with a two out single by Elfering to move the game to extra innings. In the extra frame it was all Norse, putting up five runs to win the series finale.

The Spartans are now 15-17 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
