DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team capped off Alumni Weekend with a sweep of Augsburg University on Saturday afternoon with a narrow 5-4 win in game one of the doubleheader, followed up by an 8-1 win in the series finale.
Game 1 (5-4 Spartans)
The Spartans did much of their damage in the first inning on Saturday, recording four runs on three hits with an Augsburg error. The Spartans scored all four runs on three consecutive hits as
Aidan Elfering got it started with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, followed by
Jake Cekander's double down the left line and
Cameron Pratt's single up the middle of the infield.Â
The Spartans would hold the four run lead until the top of the fourth inning when Augsburg got a run after a Spartans error that ultimately would have ended the inning. Augsburg tied the game in the fifth inning with a bases loaded walk and two hits after the bases were loaded with no outs in the inning.Â
The first game of the doubleheader would come down to the bottom of the ninth inning where
JD Schaffer came up with a huge double to left field to get into scoring position with one out.
Ryan Turner would come in to pinch run for Schaffer and would get to third base on a ground out. With two outs and the winning run at third base, the Augsburg pitcher would throw a wild pitch that led to Turner scoring on a near tie at the plate to win the game for the Spartans.Â
Angel Reyes got the start on the mound and pitched four innings.
Josh Rogde picked up win number one of the season by not allowing a single hit and six strikeouts in 4.2 inning pitched.Â
Game 2 (8-1 Spartans)
The Spartans scored one run in the first inning before blowing the game wide open in the second inning, scoring six runs that was capped off by a
Micah O'Neal grand slam to center field. O'Neal hit his first homerun of the season and first grand slam of his career. Elfering would hit his sixth homerun of the season in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-0.
Augsburg got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, but the Spartans regained their seven run lead in the bottom of the inning on an error to make it 8-1. The Spartans allowed just two hits over the last four innings to close out the game.Â
Shae Buskohl earned the win, allowing one run on six hits through seven innings on the mound. Buskohl recorded nine strikeouts in his third (3-0) win of the season.
After the sweep the Spartans improve to 10-8 overall on the season.
