Baseball Drops Loras Series Opener in Extra-Innings

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After lots of rain last night, the University of Dubuque baseball team hosted a single nine inning game against rival Loras College on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans dropped an 11-inning game against the Duhawks 2-1 in the series opener.

Since the game was supposed to be a road game for the Spartans, they remained the visitor on the scoreboard today on their home field.

Through the first five innings of the game, there were only seven combined hits as neither team could string together enough to score first. The Duhawks would break that trend in the bottom of the sixth after a single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases that set up an RBI single to give the Duhawks a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans had one last chance in the top of the ninth to tie the game. After a leadoff double by Daniel Maller, he would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt to set him up to score with only one out in the inning. On the next at-bat, the Duhawk pitcher would throw a wild pitch that gave the Spartans the tying run. The Spartans were looking to add on in the inning with the bases loaded and one out, but would hit into a double play to end the threat in the ninth.

In extra innings, the Spartans would have the bases loaded in the 10th, but back-to-back strikeouts left three stranded on base. After Aidan Elfering reached on an error to open up the 11th inning, Vic Pico hit a double to center field as Elfering tried to score from first base to take the lead he would be thrown out at home.

The Duhawks would win the game in the bottom of the 11th after a lead off hit by pitch would be followed up by three consecutive singles to score the game-winning run.

The Spartans fall to 10-9 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The Spartans will finish the series with the Duhawks next Tuesday afternoon at home.
