Elfering's Multi-Homerun Game Sends Spartans Past (RV) Kohawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team defeated the (RV) Coe College Kohawks on Tuesday afternoon in the lone home game of the three game series with the Kohawks. Aidan Elfering had a multi-homerun game as the Spartans were able to comeback from a two run deficit to win 8-6 and take the first game of the series.

Coe was the first on the scoreboard in the first inning before the Spartans got two runs in the second inning after a fly ball by Daniel Maller fell in between three Coe players to take their first lead of the game. Coe then was able to score the next three runs and lead 4-2 in the fifth.

Elfering hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3 before the Spartans exploded with a five run sixth inning. The sixth inning scoring got started with Maller driving in his third RBI of the day to tie the game. Tyson Dent hit a sacrifice fly to give the Spartans a one run lead before Elfering capped off a high-powered offensive inning with his second homerun of the day over the left field fence that opened the game up 8-4 for the Spartans.

Charlie Jaeger got the start on the mound for the Spartans and picked up his second win of the season after allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk. He was able to strikeout six batters in six innings. Jake Cekander finished in relief for the final three innings and was able to hold the Spartans lead.

The Spartans improve to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Spartans will finish the Coe series on April 15 for a two-game doubleheader at Coe College.
