Men's Hockey Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime to Foresters on Senior Day

The Spartans wrap up the home slate for the 2024-2025 season

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After leading on four different occasions on Saturday afternoon, the University of Dubuque men's hockey team lost a heart breaker to the Lake Forest College Foresters 5-4 in overtime after the Foresters netted the game-winning goal with only seven seconds left in overtime.

The Spartans celeberated senior day today where they honored three seniors. Max Messier, Jake Lamberty, and Chris Curr were all recognized.

Brandon Rossetti scored his fourth goal of the season to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead just five minutes in. Nikita Borodayenko and Max Erstad were credited with assists on the opening goal. The Foresters would respond about a minute and a half later to be all tied up at 1-1. The Spartans would recapture the lead after a Nolan Underwood goal with 7:17 left in the first, but yet again the Foresters responded two minutes later on a power play to be all tied again.

The Spartans would take a one goal lead through one period after Kaden Dundas netted a goal off assists from Brock Weimer and Owen Hardy giving the Spartans a 3-2 advantage.

Near the halfway point of the second period, the Foresters scored on another power play to even the score for the third time. In the later stages of the second period, Matt Downie would shoot a pass through defenders and into the back of the net on a Spartans power play to regain the lead at 4-3 entering the final period.

The third period was quite as the Spartans were able to maintain their one goal lead until the Foresters had the equalizer with 3:37 left. The Forester's goal would send the game to overtime.

With today's game, the Spartans have now been in six overtime games at home this year and when it felt like the game was nearing a shootout, the Foresters would net the game-winning goal with just seven seconds left in overtime.
