Women's Hockey Score Late in Home Opener, Fall to the Thunder

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's hockey team took to their home ice for the first time this season in an NCHA match with Trine University. The Spartans fell 5-1 after the full three periods.

The first shot of the game fell to UD with Ashleigh Eldridge striking the puck, forcing the goalkeeper to make a save. Following the first shot, Gracie Hall got two consecutive shots on goal, but also had her attempts saved. The Spartans had five more attempts saved before the Thunder went against the run of play and scored to make it 1-0 before the end of the first period.

At the halfway point of the second period, the Thunder went a a run to make it 5-0. The Spartans had 19 shots in the second period, but found themselves unlucky in multiple near-goal chances.

In the third period, the Spartans pulled a goal back with Lauren Jeffery putting the puck past the Thunder goalkeeper on an assist from Ava Dedrick and Asta Griggs. The final score was 5-1 as the Spartans dropped the first of two games against the Thunder.

Leading the Spartans was Lauren Jeffery with the lone goal, assisted by Ava Dedrick and Asta Griggs. Alexandria Simmons had five shots, while Natalie Meeder and Jeffery both had four shots. Natalie Post led the team in faceoffs, winning nine.

The Spartans will face Trine University in the second match of two this weekend. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, at ImOn Arena.
